A well-made radiator cover can transform a room, adding style, character, and a handy surface while neatly concealing an unattractive radiator. At Jali, we manufacture made-to-measure radiator covers, so getting accurate measurements is the key to achieving a perfect fit.
Happily, measuring for a radiator cover is straightforward. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know before placing your order.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
Radiator covers need sufficient space around the radiator to allow heat to circulate effectively while ensuring the cover fits neatly within your room. A few careful measurements taken at the start helps avoid delays and ensures your finished cover looks as good as possible.
Before you begin, you’ll need a tape measure, and somewhere to record your measurements.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Start by measuring the widest part of your radiator from one side to the other.
Don’t just measure the radiator itself. Include:
- Radiator valves and pipework that protrude from either side
- Any thermostatic radiator valves
- Any fittings that extend beyond the radiator body
Record the total width from the outermost point on one side to the outermost point on the other.

Step 2: Measure the Height
Next, measure from the floor to the highest point of the radiator.
If your radiator has a thermostatic valve that sits higher than the radiator itself, measure to the top of the valve instead.
Make a note of the overall height.

Step 3: Measure the Depth
The depth measurement is often overlooked but is equally important.
Measure from the wall behind the radiator to the furthest point at the front of the radiator, including any valves, brackets, or pipework that protrude forward.
Record this as your overall depth measurement.

Step 4: Check for Skirting Boards
Many homes have skirting boards that can affect how a radiator cover sits against the wall.
Measure:
- The height of the skirting board
- How far the skirting projects from the wall
If you intend to sit the radiator cover to the back wall without any scribing on site, this information helps when including a unit skirting board cut-out or notch..
At Jali Ltd, we can accommodate skirting board cut-outs as part of your made-to-measure design.

Step 5: Use the Jali Guide to input your Measurements

Consider Nearby Obstacles
Before ordering, check for anything that could interfere with the installation of your radiator cover, such as:
- Window sills
- Built-in furniture
- Electrical wall sockets
- Pipe boxing
- Curtains
Take note of any restrictions and ensure there is enough room for the cover to fit comfortably.

Internal vs External Measurements
One of the most common questions we receive is whether customers should provide radiator measurements or cover measurements.
In most cases, it is easiest to measure the radiator itself, including valves and pipework, and then use the Jali Guide which will allow recommended clearances.
If you are ordering a bespoke radiator cover from Jali Ltd, our team can help you determine the appropriate finished dimensions based on your measurements.
Tips for Accurate Measuring
To achieve the best results:
- Measure twice
- Use a metal tape measure
- Measure in millimetres
- Include all valves, pipes and protrusions.
- Check measurements at more than one point if walls or floors are uneven.
A few extra minutes spent measuring can make a significant difference to the final fit.
