Decorative Fretwork Panels by Jali

This autumn, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London is hosting Fabric of India, an exhibition exploring Indian influences. Focusing on India’s handmade textiles from the 3rd to the 21st

century, it promises to be both fascinating and visually sumptuous.

At Jali, we always want to know more about the patterns and techniques of the countries and cultures we visit. Some of those we’ve brought back with us have influenced Jali’s most popular

decorative fretwork patterns, seen in the decorative shutters below.

Every style creates a wonderfully decorative effect.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Jali derives from the pierced lattice screens known as jali, or jaali in the Indian language of Gujarati.

These intricate screens traditionally protected homes from harsh sunlight while still allowing visibility.

Indian architecture has included jali screens for centuries. many early examples featured hand-carved stone designs.

Later, the Mughals developed the art even further by creating detailed inlay work using marble and semi-precious stones.

A Tradition of Beautiful Patterns

Traditional jali designs often incorporate arabesque or geometric Islamic patterns.

Their evolution reached dizzy heights in the breathtaking white marble screens found at the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal.
