Get Tidy

Clutter

A bane of modern life and something many of us seem to spend half our own lives fighting. My favourite definition of clutter is “a lot of objects in a state of being untidy”; it sums up the sheer number of items in our homes, plus the fact that they’re very often in the wrong place. (Although “in a state of being untidy” could apply equally to some of the people I love best…)

Making Space for the Things We Love

Let’s talk about stuff.

All those things we collect. The items we keep. The pieces that slowly infiltrate our homes.

Sometimes, they sit around, create clutter and just get in the way. As a result, they can leave us feeling frustrated, unmotivated and even a little guilty.

Maybe that’s just me. However, I don’t think I’m alone.

The Challenge of Decluttering

Over the years, decluttering experts have built careers helping people manage their possessions. They encourage us to reduce what we own and let go of things that don’t serve a purpose any more.

For example, Marie Kondo famously advises: “Never keep anything you don’t use or love.”

However, that suggestion can be easier said than done.

I use and love my vintage bags, dresses, gloves, and 1950s costume jewellery. The problem isn’t that I don’t value them.

They simply take up lots of space.

Where Jali Furniture Helps Reduce Clutter

This is where Jali comes in.

The beauty of our fine furniture is that it helps you make the most of every space in your home. Every millimetre counts.

With a huge choice of drawers, shelves, and cupboards, you can create storage that works for your belongings. Better still, you can combine all three using our 3D online designer tool.

As a result, you will get storage that is both practical and beautiful.

Storage and Design Together

Interior expert Vanessa Holden explains:

“Don’t think about storage and design as two separate ideas when they should really be thought of together. Storage doesn’t have to be utilitarian – you can have great storage and interesting design in one.”

That perfectly reflects the Jali approach.

Because our furniture is made to measure, it fits your space exactly. Ordering, creating stylish storage has never been easier.

Decluttering the Right Way

The Good Housekeeping article where I found Marie Kondo and Vanessa Holden’s advice also shares an important tip:

“Don’t just rearrange the things you don’t need.”

And it does make sense.

Simply moving clutter around doesn’t solve anything.

Like many people, I still keep things I don’t necessarily need right now. Some items, however, hold memories or maybe, have genuine value.

So, I’m making a real effort to do a sort out. I’m recycling, donating, and moving on the things that no longer earn their place.

Because great storage should make room for the things that truly matter.

And Finally…

I’m going to try one of Marie Kondo’s practical tips for saving space. She says “I now fold as many clothes as possible and store them on shelves. You can fit 20 to 40 pieces of folded clothing in the space required to hang 10. If you fold each item into a neat rectangle and stand it up rather than laying it flat. You can see garments at a glance, like the spines of books.” Worth a go, I’d say. And if you need the shelves, well, you know where to come for those…
